ZOOM ON THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF QUENTIN DMR

Can you remind us who you are and your artistic practice?

I am Quentin DMR, a visual artist, I work mainly with black and white portraits that I destructure to make the final visual abstract. The idea is to let the public make room for their imagination. Whether on paintings or murals, I work a lot on paper, but I also work on wood, glass, iron or plastic. The tearing of the material is very important in my new work.

What is your background, how did you start creating?

Before starting my artistic career, I worked in the social sector. My objective was to help people in precarious situations to find work, or to set up artistic projects that allowed some of them to discover an unknown creative universe.

In your daily work as an artist, what inspires you? What is the trigger for the creation of a work?

The trigger is generally the human element, the encounters, the stories. All this gives me enough inspiration to create something afterwards. Urban music also inspires me a lot in my artistic process. This music speaks about today’s society better than any other medium.

Can you explain to us the way you build a work? What are the different stages of creation?

I start with the meeting, the place. Then I create the meetings that allow me to work on my creation by taking portraits. Back in my studio, I work mainly on photoshop and then on the paper print that I cut, tear up, fragment… All the frescos, installations or paintings are created in small formats, in models. I scan my creations to create a worn, damaged texture and then I enlarge everything on large paper prints.
