Zoom on the creative process of the Diamantaire

Can you remind us who you are and your artistic practice?

My artist name is Le Diamantaire. I live and work in Paris. I am known mainly for the diamonds I stick in the street, which are made of recycled mirrors that I paint.

What is your background, how did you start to create ?

I started to stick in the street in 2011. At that time I wanted to intervene again in the street but not in the form of graffiti or stencil, I sought a stronger identity. So I chose my love for materials and my passion for graffiti. I thought that donating this strong symbol made of mirrors destined for the trash was a beautiful image of the fact that we can give things a second chance.

In your daily work as an artist, what inspires you? What is the trigger for the creation of a work?

Creation for me is like a puzzle. I feed myself with everything I encounter on a daily basis to make my creation benefit from it. Each work I make is like a step towards the next. At the moment, movement and color inspire me a lot.

Can you explain to us the way in which you build a work? What are the different stages of creation?

In my system of creation, what will be primordial is the effect I want to give to the sculpture. It is this effect that will predefine the aesthetics of the final work. From there, I try to emphasize the desired effect. For the fabrication, I draw everything on a 3D software, which allows me to have a quick and detailed sketch. Then I can start the fabrication in the workshop to cut the steel sheets and the different mirrors. I do the steel assembly and finally I adjust the mirrors.
