ABOUT THE BOOK

Variation(s) is the first monograph by artist Yann Le Berre, aka Yann L’Outsider, retracing the last ten years of his Black & White period. The 272 pages of this high-quality art book, conceived as a work in its own right, detail the personal, professional and artistic history of an outsider artist whose work is the product of a dual path.

He trained in cabinet-making and furniture restoration at the prestigious École Boulle in Paris, where he learned patience, rigour and meticulousness. In the world of graffiti, imbued with freedom, urgency and adrenalin.

The title of the book – Variation(s) – evokes the permanent, causal and iterative interactions between his work in the studio and his outdoor paintings. A collector’s item, the book Variation(s) and its limited editions are published and self-distributed by the young publishing house Land’Artic, based in Vannes (Morbihan, 56).

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Quimperlé, in the south of Finistère, in 1984, Yann L’Outsider is a self-taught graffiti artist and painter with a diploma in arts and crafts from the Ecole Boulle. He masters the entire production chain for his works, from stretcher to canvas.

L’Outsider’s work is the product of two parallel paths. The first, at school and then at work in cabinet-making and furniture restoration, taught him patience, rigour and meticulousness. The other, in the world of graffiti, imbued with freedom, urgency and adrenalin.

For almost ten years now, in his native Brittany, at Riec-sur-Belon, the artist has been developing an abstract painting style that carries within it the sum total of this multi-faceted path. A work of synthesis, oppositions and dualities.

In black and white, indoors and out, wild and meticulous, masterful and full of accidents, Yann L’Outsider’s painting is a reflection of its creator: rich, coherent and singular. Now exhibited in a number of galleries, and honoured in 2019 with the Palais de Tokyo/ADAGP Special Jury Prize, his work summons up the urgency and immediacy of graffiti on walls and canvas.
