ËRELL’S NEW SCREEN PRINT IMMORTALIZES THE “POLYCHROME” FRESCO – ON SALE AT THE BOOKSHOP

About screen printing:

On the occasion of the Olympic Games, the artist Ërell takes over the quay of the urban art center, Fluctuart with a monumental fresco measuring more than 40 meters.

The design of the “Polychrome” fresco was created to fit into the context of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The composition uses the colors of the rings, while respecting their order of appearance around the notions of movement and dynamism. . The idea here is to echo the motto of the games – “Altius, citius, fortius” – through formal variations such as repetition, rhythm, change of scale and thickness of the line.

 

This screen print immortalizes “Polychrome”, this work created on the quay which will leave its mark on the history of Fluctuart.

About the artist

Artist / Designer Ërell experiments with an ephemeral form of appropriation of urban space. His practice took root in graffiti in Bordeaux in the early 2000s. From 2006, nourished in particular by minimal art, urban art and organic design, he undertook work to simplify his signature. Inspired in particular by Olivier Stack, East Erik, Jürgen Mayer and Sol Lewitt and his work “Variations of Incomplete Open Cube”, he will end up reducing it into a simple geometric shape, the hexagon which he will subsequently split.

The genesis of this new identity involves the transformation of a handwritten signature, initially a tag, into a modular and reproducible visual emblem whose main function is to be identifiable by everyone, while being impactful and lively. From this new identity comes an infinity of combinations – the Figures. His compositions integrate certain characteristics of typography: variations in alignments and approaches, dialogues between shapes and counter-forms, games with lines, masses, solids and voids. They are generated using typographic construction grids and are made up of its modules reproduced using manufactured tools such as cookie cutters, tracing templates, stencils, or even printing matrices. In the street, his signature “patterns” carry out a form of “urban contamination”, which consists of the systematic and compulsive installation of abstract compositions.

Throughout his studies at ESADSE*, he creates bridges between his street practice and his design training. This transversality fuels the transformation of his graffiti practice into work on geometric abstraction. This creative process, inherited from a hybridization between graphic design and graffiti, frees itself from the latter’s codes in form, thus offering the opportunity to evolve one’s writing according to the supports and techniques used.

In 2016, under the leadership of Nicolas Laugero Lasserre and his Galerie Artistik Rezo in Paris, production work began in the workshop. In his work as a visual artist, he uses different skills, notably acquired during his design training. His signature, which has become writing, is a pretext for urban exploration and plastic experimentation.
