Book signing for ART OF SKATE: Histoire(s) d’une culture urbaine

Join us for a special signing session with Sylvie Barco and Philippe Danjean to mark the release of the new book “Art of Skate: Histoire(s) d’une culture urbaine”, published by Alternatives on Saturday 13 April from 3pm to 5pm!

About the book :

Sport, means of locomotion, symbol of popular culture: skateboarding is all this and much more. From the empty swimming pools of Los Angeles in the 60’s to the skateparks of the Olympic Games, skateboarding has spread across the world. Cinema, music, streetwear, video games, the specialist press, photography… few sectors and territories escape its popularity. Skateboarders, their playgrounds and their equipment have led to the emergence of a street culture in its own right, which, despite a strong visual presence, is still too little known. The prowess of the figures, the spontaneity of the groups and the spirit of competition also reveal a constant search for the beauty of a perfectly mastered gesture – often at the cost of a hard apprenticeship – and a concern for transmission.

This book looks at this phenomenon and also shows how renowned artists have moved into the field by creating boards specially dedicated to it.

About the authors:

Sylvie Barco has been photographing the imprint of urban cultures for 25 years. Philippe Danjean and Stéphane Madoeuf, both collectors, conceived and organised the Art of Skate exhibition, which took place on Fluctuart in 2022.

We look forward to seeing you there!
